Is a revolution against a government justified?

Recalling the events that occurred exactly one year ago means reliving the scenes that we anticipated but never really wish to happen. But it did. And the only thing we can do then was to shout to a blank wall that this is not what it appears to be.

Although I fully understand the reality of life in other planets, galaxies and parallel universes, I didn’t readily bite into these channeled messages purportedly coming from the so-called Galactic Federation of Light or the StarTrek sounding Ashtar Command adventures. The board now begins looking for a new president under guidelines directors adopted in 2011 calling for an “open, merit-based and transparent selection” process.

The chief financial officer of Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. announced recently that he will resign from the position, a move that will reportedly lead to a significant executive shuffle.
According to MarketWatch, CFO Peter Marriott says he plans to pursue a non-executive career after spending 15 years as the bank’s finance chief. Marriott will officially leave the financial institution on May 1, at which time institutional banking head Shayne Elliott will reportedly take over the role.
This move will lead to a number of other changes, as the bank’s head of Asian operations will take on a larger role to include global institutional banking, while a new chief executive for global wealth management and private banking will also be named.

Nicaragua’s Central Bank President Antenor Rosales quit amid differences with President Daniel Ortega over plans to use central bank reserves for the creation of a regional bank for a Venezuelan-led bloc of Latin American nations, known as Alba.
Ortega has proposed that Finance Minister Alberto Guevara replace Rosales as head of the central bank, said Edwin Castro, the chief legislator for the ruling Sandinista party, in a statement on a government website today. Castro said the appointment must be approved by lawmakers and didn’t say whether Guevara would continue at the Finance Ministry.
Castro said Rosales’s resignation was “normal government procedure” and not a result of the disagreement with Ortega.
In a Feb. 4 meeting of Alba leaders in Caracas, Ortega agreed to put 1 percent of Nicaragua’s international reserves, or about $17 million, toward the Alba bank, according to a statement on a government website. Rosales told reporters in Managua on Feb. 6 that “no one can touch the international reserves of Nicaragua.”
“The resignation of Rosales sends a bad message to the people of Nicaragua,” opposition legislator Wilfredo Navarro said in comments at the National Assembly broadcast on TV Channel 100% Noticias. “He was defending the legality of the country’s central bank institution. Withdrawing funds for an unknown bank is a violation of the institution.”

Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) — Joseph Tan, chief Asian economist of Credit Suisse Group AG’s private bank in Singapore has resigned.
“I have left Credit Suisse,” Tan, who joined the Swiss bank in September 2008, said. “I’m considering my options at the moment.”
Tan previously worked at Fortis Bank SA and Standard Chartered Plc. Credit Suisse spokeswoman Juliette Leong confirmed his departure in an e-mail. Today was his last day, she said.
Germany’s president resigned in disgrace yesterday after failing to gag newspapers investigating him over political favours.
The resignation of Christian Wulff – a victory for Press freedom – is an embarrassing blow to Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had hand-picked her political ally as president.

The court is racing toward a verdict before the charges expire due to the statute of limitations. Mr De Pasquale calculated that would happen by mid-July.

FORTUNE — Lloyd Blankfein may step down as chief executive of Goldman Sachs as early as this summer; and president and chief operating officer Gary Cohn is the lead candidate to replace him, according to a Goldman executive and a source close to the firm.
A Goldman spokesman declined to comment.
To be sure, anything can happen over the course of the next few months and the departure of Blankfein, 57, is not certain. It is still up in the air whether Blankfein wants to step down. It would also not be unheard of for Blankfein to share the role of CEO, as so many others at Goldman have in the past. Former co-heads include John Weinberg and John Whitehead; Robert Rubin and Stephen Friedman; and Jon Corzine and Henry Paulson.

A feud over corporate governance compounded an already painful December for a major Central Virginia financial institution. Virginia National Bank has experienced a leadership shake-up that has seen nearly one third of the board of trustees quit including the chairman, Mark Giles.
“My resignation is effective immediately,” Giles tells President Glenn Rust in a December 19 letter that followed an apparently contentious meeting earlier that day. Two other board members, Ms. Claire Gargalli and Mr. Leslie Disharoon, also quit that same Monday in what the bank concedes was a disagreement over the composition of its board of directors. A fourth director on the 13-person board, Neal Kassell, resigned two days later for unstated reasons.

Arrests in Olympus Scandal Point to Widening Inquiry Into a Cover-Up

TOKYO — Arrests of seven people Thursday accused of involvement in the $1.7 billion accounting scandal at Olympus, including the company’s former chairman and executive vice president, point to a widening investigation into a cover-up ostensibly carried out by top management with the help of a group of former bankers.
Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, who was the company’s chairman until the scandal broke last fall, was arrested in Tokyo as were two other former executives on suspicion of having falsified financial statements, Tokyo prosecutors said. Two former Nomura investment bankers who had been previously mentioned by investigators were also taken into custody, accused of violating securities laws, and so were two of the bankers’ associates.
By aiming a spotlight on what critics say is Japan’s lax corporate governance, and casting a shadow over one of the country’s former blue-chip companies, the Olympus scandal has become a test of how far Japan is willing to go to fight white-collar crime.
SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) — The head of South Korea’s No. 5 lender Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) stepped down after completing his three-year term on Friday, and handing over to his successor, the role of completing the deal to sell the bank to a local counterpart.

RIYADH: Saudi Hollandi Banks Managing Director Geoffrey Calvert has resigned for personal reasons, the bank announced yesterday. On accepting his resignation at the board of directors meeting held yesterday in Riyadh, it was decided to appoint Dr. Bernd Van Linder, general manager of the treasury, to be the acting managing director of the bank succeeding Calvert.
Mubarak Abdullah Al-Khafrah, chairman of the board of directors, thanked Calvert for his contributions to the development of the bank during his time as managing director. He wished the new acting manager great success. Linder joined the Saudi Hollandi Bank in 2006. He has 12 years banking experience in ABN Amro in different positions.
Ken Ofori-Atta steps down as Executive Chair of Databank Group
Investment banker, Ken Ofori-Atta has stepped down as the Executive Chair of the Databank Group.
He announced his retirement from the investment bank on Tuesday. This will relive him of the day-to-day administration of the firm even though he will stay on as the ceremonial chair.
Mr. Ofori-Atta and Kelly Gadzekpo set up Databank in 1990 and is one of the leading investment banks not only in Ghana but in the sub region. Kelly Gadzekpo is expected to take over as new Chief Executive of the Group.

Andrej Plos, the chief executive officer of Nova Kreditna Banka Maribor, who took the helm of Slovenia’s second-biggest bank in January, offered his resignation today without giving a reason. Bozo Jasovic, the CEO of the larger Nova Ljubljanska Banka d.d. stepped down in December over the bank’s attempt to sell the holding in retailer Mercator Poslovni Sistem d.d. to the Croatian rival Agrokor d.d.
“It’s actually hard to believe that the biggest lenders are without a proper leadership in such crucial times for the banking sector and as Slovenia sees its credit rating lowered due to a fragile bank system,” Saso Stanovnik, head of research at Ljubljana brokerage Alta Invest d.d., said in an e-mail today. “One can only hope the new leaderships are in place as soon as possible to tackle the problems of the banking sector.”
Slovenian banks are struggling with mounting losses as the faltering economy pushes more companies into bankruptcy. Lenders in Slovenia, which adopted the euro in 2007, reported 356 million euros ($469 million) of losses last year, the central bank said on Feb. 7.
Social finance pioneer Hayday steps down from Charity Bank
Malcolm Hayday, CEO and one of the founders of Charity Bank, has decided to step down from the post this year.
Under Hayday’s leadership, Charity Bank has grown from concept to launching as the world’s first general registered charity that is also an authorised bank.
This year Charity Bank celebrates its 10th anniversary, with the bank’s balance sheet at the end of 2011 exceeding £80m, an increase of almost 20% on the previous year, and many times the opening figure of £6.4m in 2002. It also expects to report a surplus of over £350,000.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Morgan Stanley’s (NYSE:MWD – news) two top investment bankers resigned on Wednesday, increasing the pressure on Chief Executive Philip Purcell and raising questions about whether the securities firm can remain independent.
The resignations are the biggest blow yet in a battle raging between Purcell and a group of eight former Morgan Stanley executives seeking to oust him.
Joseph Perella, Morgan’s investment banking chairman and company vice chairman and one of the best-known bankers on Wall Street, resigned after 12 years at the firm. Tarek “Terry” Abdel-Meguid, a long-time Perella deputy and the head of investment banking, also quit.
The firm quickly named new co-heads of its Investment Banking Division and said Perella and Meguid had agreed to stay on for an unspecified transition period.
“Morgan Stanley simply cannot be managed if this much turmoil exists within,” Punk, Ziegel & Co. analyst Dick Bove said. “And if it cannot be effectively managed, I don’t see how Purcell can stay at the top.”
Morgan Stanley’s board responded directly to the dissidents on Wednesday, criticizing their campaign and reaffirming its support for Purcell.
At least 10 traders and bankers have left the firm since Purcell shook up management in the securities business late last month. The departure of Perella is especially painful because of his stature on Wall Street and his recent support for Purcell.

CARACAS — President Hugo Chavez lost one of his closest and oldest collaborators as Science and Technology Minister Jesse Chacon submitted his resignation after his brother was arrested in connection with the crisis in which state control has been imposed on six banks.
Arne Chacon was arrested by the state security service, DISIP, after three more banks, Banco Real, Baninvest and Central, were “intervened” by the government, in addition to the four banks — Canarias, Banpro, Bolívar and Confederado — that were first taken over on November 20 on orders from Finance Minister Ali Rodriguez Araque. Two stockbroking houses have been raided by Disip and prosecutors since then, one of which is said also to have been put under direct state control.
Brought before a court, Chacon was ordered to be held in custody pending further investigation of his possible involvement in three banks, reports said. Chacon’s brother, the minister, said that when he’d heard the news “I called the president and told him that in these conditions I would prefer to resign so that there would be no doubt about our transparency in this investigation.”

LONDON — Michel Péretié, head of Société Générale’s corporate and investment banking division, is leaving the French bank to pursue other opportunities.
Mr. Péretié, who held the position for three years after joining the bank from Bear Stearns, will be succeeded by the division’s chief financial officer, Didier Valet, according to a statement from Société Générale.
Two other appointments also were announced. Christophe Mianné will become deputy chief executive of the division, while Bertrand Badré has been appointed its chief financial officer.
Now that we are witnessing these resignations en masse from the players of the rotten system, we can only ask when will the massive arrests begin?

This article is supposed to be posted next week, but recent events compelled us to post it now. This article should be read superimposing our last article, “The Last Senseless War“.
Yesterday, 6th February 2012, we were hit with 6.9 magnitude shallow earthquake; 7.0+ intensity in Dumaguete City. This event, which left 52 people dead, followed days of heavy and continuous rainfall in the Visayas region of the country. A tricycle-driving man was seen shouting that sea level had gone so low which may indicate a tsunami in a few minutes, sending shockwave among coastal residents in Cebu City.
This earthquake rekindles sad memories of our experience back in 2006.
The Guinsaugon Landslide
Almost six years ago, 17 February 2006, a deadly landslide followed two weeks of heavy rainfalls and covered the whole village of Guinsaugon, with more than a thousand lives lost in a matter of minutes. Officially, the death toll was at 1,126, which included: 246 schoolchildren, 80 women attending the 5th anniversary of Guinsaugon Women’s Health Association, etc.
Causes of the Disaster
The true cause of the landslide is still being debated until today. Here are some of the facts and theories as posted in Wikipedia:
“Philippine congressman Roger Mercado of Southern Leyte claimed in a Reuters interview that logging and mining done in the area three decades ago was the main culprit.[9] Dave Petley, professor at the International Landslide Centre, Durham University, told the BBC that the causes Congressman Mercado mentioned, if proven true, created a “dangerous combination” that produced a “classic landslide scenario”.[10]
However, local government officials and eyewitnesses say that the area was well forested and the governor’s office said that deforestation logging activities were not the causal factor.[10]
Experts did agree that torrential rains lasting two weeks before the mudslide was the main cause for the disaster. Rainfall amounting to over 200 cm (79 inches) in ten days loosened the soil so much that the resulting sludge and rocks thundered down the slopes of nearby Mount Can-abag, virtually disintegrating it. The La Niña weather phenomenon was blamed for the non-stop rains that occurred in the province, as well as in the Caraga region, which is due south of Leyte. San Francisco, Agusan del Sur mayor Carie Ladernora declared the state of calamity on her town by 12 February 2006.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a magnitude 2.6 earthquake in Southern Leyte just prior to the landslide although the effects of this are unclear.[10]”
However in a workshop held in 2008, a more scholarly exchange could surely shed some light…
“After two years, the international geoscience community including experts from Japan, Canada, United States, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Hong Kong, UK, Taiwan and the Philippines, came together in Tacloban and St. Bernard to examine known information on the Guinsaugon disaster.
… There is general accord among scientists that high precipitation a week prior to the failure contributed to the conditions at failure, but the 5 day delay between the rain and the landslide, and the fact that Southern Leyte regularly gets high overall levels of precipitation means that the precise nature of that contribution is unknown. Similarly, the role of minor ground shaking that occurred at about the same time is still uncertain. “Was the landslide caused by ground shaking or excessive rain? This is one of the things that is not yet resolved.” said Dr. Mark Albert Zarco, a professor at the Department of Engineering Sciences, University of the Philippines Diliman in a news story.”
All of the above are the official versions of what had occurred on that fateful day. Now it’s time to hear the voices from the ground.
Homecoming
More than 5 years have gone by, and just more than a year ago I decided to go back to my mother’s hometown, which I still want to call by its old name, Himatagon, after being away for more than a decade. Himatagon was a former village of a more progressive town of Cabalian. It separated to form its own town about 50 years ago, and is now known as the town of St. Bernard. St. Bernard now has 36 villages. Cabalian became the town of San Juan.
Being away when the worst disaster this town had experienced, and the technical know-how that I’ve gathered through all these years obliged me to get to the bottom of what had actually happened once I arrived there.
Being mindful about local sensitivities regarding the subject, I kept seizing every opportunity to ask specific questions relating to the event in every conversation with individuals I’ve known for some time, and with total strangers alike. Without injecting my own theories beforehand in any of these conversations, they gave me revealing facts prior to, during the event, and immediate aftermath relating to actual rescue and recovery operations.
The Unofficial Observations
There are countless accounts which did not make it to the papers. Tricycle drivers, fishermen, market peddlers, ordinary civilians, and government technicians, are just some of the people I’ve talked to. Here are their accounts I’ve collected so far:
Weeks of heavy rainfall preceded the event, however the raining ceased days prior to the event itself;
They heard loud explosions, and saw white smoke somewhere in the area where the landslide occurred prior to the actual event;
Text messages were still coming from the teachers and schoolchildren who were buried alive; none of them survive;
Chinook helicopters involved in the rescue operations didn’t fly directly towards the disaster area, but would circle around through another town of Liloan before going into the Northwest side of the mountain where the landslide had occurred. Observers can only see from the Southeast side of the disaster area.
Chinook helicopters were seen carrying stones and boulders in very large nets and dumped them onto the trucks waiting below and said that such measure is very important for ‘laboratory analysis” to determine the cause of the event, and thereby prevent another disaster;
The sky was continuously roaring as too many of these flights continued on even at night and when the rescue operations were officially suspended due to bad weather;
Fishermen from a nearby village of Lipanto are claiming today that when these rescue operations were ongoing, they were prohibited to go about their normal livelihood of fishing. One brave and possibly a hungry fisherman did try to venture into the sea, and suddenly, about 5 rubber boats with “large propeller” at the back came circling around the bay area. But what strikes me was their account that there were strange lights beneath the sea bed while at some distance some of these US naval ships, including an aircraft carrier, were anchored;
Civilians noticed camouflaged military men guarding far outside the disaster zone, including the main roads, which restricted their mobility;
A tricycle driver overheard a conversation with a government technician that “this one is not a natural disaster”. The same lowly civilian said that there were diggings for gold occurring in the area.
Questions That Need Some Answers
Why would the US send an aircraft carrier to a disaster zone that is relatively small compared to other similar but bigger events, e.g. Hurricane Katrina?
Would you believe that the same aircraft carrier’s arrival in the country, less than a week earlier, was pure coincidence?
Why is there a submarine surveying the seabed which is too far away from the actual zone of disaster?
Why would those Chinook helicopters needed to approach the disaster area from the backside when going directly from the bay area towards it was not only easier but more economical?
Why there’s a need to take huge amounts of boulders when a handful would do the same job of analyzing soil integrity?
Why there were too many flights of these gigantic grasshoppers when the actual recovered bodies were only too few (53) according to the Red Cross?
Why would these flights continued even when the rescue operations were suspended at nightfall and even beyond the next several days?
Why were the text messages from the victims ignored, and no rescue measures were taken that would somehow increase their survivability just like in the case of the miners in Chile?
Why the people were complaining that relief goods and donations were not proportionate to what was broadcasted to be forthcoming which, to their estimate, could possibly turn this town into a small city?
Was there some truth to the reason why the priest assigned here was reassigned due to his being vocal about the holding up of these donations by his superiors?
UPDATE [14feb2012]: Due to persistent inquiry made by Michael, this writer made some web searches and obtained these results…
“February 5, The amphibious assault ship is currently in the Philippine Sea, preparing for Exercise Balikatan 2006, scheduled Feb. 20 to March 5. The exercise is an annual Republic of the Philippines and U.S. bilateral combined exercise.
February 9, LHD 2 Amphibious Ready Group once again pulled to Apra Harbor, Guam, to load elements of the 31st MEU.
February 17, USS Essex and USS Harpers Ferry departed Subic Bay, Philippines, shortly after arriving. Both ships were ordered back to sea, and are en route to the Philippine Island of Leyte, to provide much needed humanitarian assistance for the victims of a devastating landslide.
February 21, LHD 2 and LSD 49 are currently in the Cabalian Bay, Republic of the Philippines, providing humanitarian assistance to victims in the Saint Bernard Municipality, where the town of Guinsahugon located in the southern part of the island was completely devastated.
March 1, Sailors and Marines of the Forward Deployed Amphibious Ready Group and 31st MEU, Joint Task Force (JTF) Balikatan and USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) completed Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief (HA/DR) operations February 28, for the victims of a wide-sweeping mudslide that occurred there Feb 17.
March 8, LHD 2 and LSD 49 are currently off the coast of Iwo Jima to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the famous Pacific War battle in Feb. 1945.
March 14, The amphibious assault ship returned to Sasebo, Japan, completing bilateral training in the Republic of Philippines and Guam, while also delivering relief to mudslide victims in the Philippines’ southern Leyte Island.”
The MEU consists of a command element, a infantry battalion with artillery, amphibious vehicle and other attachments, a composite helicopter squadron reinforced with a Harrier squadron and a combat logistics battalion. The 31st MEU is currently based out of Camp Hansen, Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler, Okinawa, Japan. This is the only permanently forward-deployed MEU, and is America’s expeditionary force-in-readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.”
What is more shocking is the fact that indeed this aircraft carrier does have a submarine in its fleet… in addition to a phalanx of Chinook Helicopters…

Description (2008): The forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex performs a stern-gate marriage with Landing Craft Utility 1631, while back-loading elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, June 9, 2008. The USS Essex is off the coast of Sattahip, Thailand after completing Cobra Gold 2008, a Thai and U.S.-sponsored military exercise designed to enhance interoperability between joint U.S. forces and the combined forces of the United States, Thailand, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia.
If you haven’t read the description above, it says “Cobra Gold 2008, a Thai and U.S.-sponsored military exercise”… but is it really a military exercise, or a gold recovery operation, too?
Let’s leave it to the Thais this time. But just remember, Thailand was also mentioned in one of these Golden Stories…
Anyway, the “about 5 rubber boats with propellers at the back” are actually hovercrafts officially called as Landing Craft Air Cushion [LCAC]. These crafts were chasing our local fishermen who came near the battleships during those humanitarian missions. This they said was just a precautionary measure in line with the war on terror concept. Even if we know now that the war on terror is actually a Lie Full of Terror, how could you expect a Filipino fisherman to pose a threat after you save him from a “natural disaster”?

While the above picture was taken in Thailand, the same scenario did occur in this town in 2006 disaster, i.e. massive number of LAVs and Humvees were deployed.
However, what is not clear about their versions of the gold treasure story being buried in the islands and seabed is that not all of these are from foreign origins, i.e. there are thousands of tons which also came from our own mining operations in the past, and still continuing even today.
If these people have enough motivation to go to war just for oil, what will prevent them from dropping a bomb to create a “natural disaster” such as the Guinsaugon Landslide in 2006, within a week of their docking on the nearest seaport, and then launch a comprehensive treasure hunting and recovery operations cloaked as humanitarian efforts?
They don’t even need to do the “hunting” by then, because mining permits were issued prior to the occurrence of the landslide…
Mining operations
“Religious leaders and civil authorities suspect that mining interests are behind the Southern Leyte tragedy.
The Supreme Court decision December last year[when?] reversing its earlier ruling concerning the legality of the Mining Act of 1995 has paved the way for U.S. and other foreign mining corporations to claim mining rights in the country, the report of the recently-concluded[when?] International Solidarity Mission (ISM) said. These corporations have particularly penetrated Samar and Leyte, islands in central Philippines which are rich in bauxite, nickel and copper.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) lists two mining companies which have an ongoing exploration in the region, particularly in Southern Leyte: The Buena Suerte Mining Corporation, which explores the areas near San Francisco, San Ricardo, Pintuyan and Liloan (6,611.59 has.) and Orophilippine Ventures, Inc., which explores Sogod, Liloan, St. Bernard and Libago
