Attention to Syria is being overshadowed by the events in Ukraine, but the bleeding continues…
SYRIAN EXTREMISTS ARE TWEETING SICKENING PHOTOS OF PUBLIC CRUCIFIXIONS. DO YOU CARE YET?
The extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has controlled and terrorized the Northern Syrian town of Raqqa for about a year now.
Yesterday, an account claiming to be affiliated with the group Tweeted out graphic images of two public crucifixions.
“We just executed 7 spies trying to plant bombs on cars of the ikhwa. Massive turnout,” reads the caption.
These men’s corpses are blood-stained and blindfolded. In both photos, a young boy stands a few feet from the torture victim’s body.
There’s no identifying info for the victims, so it’s possible that they weren’t spies, just innocent people.
Facebook user Abu Ibrahim Alrquaoui, who’s the founder of a group called “Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently,” claims the photos were originally his. He says he was there during the public torture session.
Realistically, crucifixions might not be more terrible than things the world is sadly used to hearing about: deaths from sarin gas, bombs in cars, and missiles killing kids in schools.
For many, however, the history of crucifixions as a form of ancient torture makes the reality of these deaths that much more horrifying.
The Twitter user who bragged about the incident wanted his post to threaten and frighten those who saw it.
But could it actually serve to raise awareness of inhumane crimes that are easy to ignore when they’re so far away?
We sure hope so.
