Ali Reza Tangsiri, top commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), disclosed on 24 February that the Islamic Republic has already created 2,200 kilometers of strategic ‘underground cities’ that contain and shelter an expansive arsenal of weapons.
These strategic sites retain warships which deploy drones, oceangoing helicopter carriers, missile-launching capabilities, and several other military innovations from the IRGC.
Tangsiri added that these military sites are connected to incoming and outgoing waterways and pass through islands near Iran’s shores. Local reports indicate that merchants and oil tankers pass through these waters on a daily basis.
The IRGC’s navy commander recently announced that Tehran has planned nine naval training operations in its southern waters and has added 650 new vessels to its navy, with speeds ranging from 55 to 110 knots. Tangsiri added that the maximum speed of these vessels surpasses three times the amount of a standard US vessel, which travels at a maximum speed of 35 knots.
He further disclosed that the vessels retain combat systems that are able to hide them from enemy radars and contain missiles that are manufactured locally.
Iran’s military capabilities have vastly improved in the past few years, as Tehran is known for its IRGC-made Shahed-136 suicide drones, as well as for vessels from its elite naval force in the Persian Gulf.
Last week, BBC Persian reported that an Israeli-linked oil tanker was attacked by an Iranian Shahed drone a week prior.
Senior Israeli security officials confirmed the report and suggested the Iranian attack was an attempt at revenge for attacks attributed to Israel against Iran.
Iran has accused Israel of attacking a number of sensitive military and nuclear sites in the past few years.
No casualties were reported and the damage to the tanker was allegedly not significant.
However, on 14 February, Iranian state media reported that Iran had killed two Israeli officers in retaliation for a 29 January sabotage attack in Isfahan.
According to a report by Iranian state media, an Israeli spokesman confirmed that two Israeli officers had been killed in accidents. The report noted that other Israeli sources have indicated that the killing of the two officers came as part of an Iranian operation in response to the Isfahan attack.
On 29 January, an explosion occurred at an Iranian Defense Ministry ammunition depot in the city of Isfahan. According to Israeli sources, this was a booby-trapped drone attack. No casualties were reported. Additionally, a large fire broke out in a major refinery in Tehran. The cause of the fire remains unclear.
