It did not take long for Russel Brand to be accused of rape, just like Julian Assange before him. His YouTube channel garnered millions of subscribers in such a short span of time.
The British actor and comedian firmly denies the allegations made by four women, one of whom was 16 at the time, as reported by The Times on Saturday.
The newspaper states that these allegations were uncovered through an investigation conducted by The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4, and they encompass various claims against the 48-year-old, supposedly spanning from 2006 to 2013.
One woman alleges that Brand raped her at his Los Angeles residence on an unspecified date, with medical records indicating she sought assistance at a rape crisis center. The Times has obtained text messages in which the woman emphasizes the importance of consent, and Brand responds with an apology.
Among the other allegations, one woman asserts that she was in an abusive relationship with Brand when she was 16 and he was 31. During this time, Brand repeatedly referred to her as “the child,” and she claims he once subjected her to an unwanted sexual act which she halted by punching him in the stomach.
On the day before the allegations were made public, Brand posted a video on his YouTube and social media accounts, vehemently denying what he described as “a series of severe and hostile accusations” made against him by a “mainstream media TV company” and a newspaper.
Brand stated that all his relationships were consensual, addressing a period in his life during which he admitted to being very promiscuous. He emphasized his lifelong transparency about his past and questioned whether there might be an ulterior motive behind the criminalization of his transparency.
The Times also mentioned that Brand and his legal team were given eight days to respond to the allegations. In response, Brand’s lawyers suggested that the claims may reflect a concerning agenda, particularly because he is an alternative media broadcaster competing with the mainstream media.
Elon Musk responded to Brand’s video on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Of course. They don’t like competition.”
In the same video, Brand highlighted what he referred to as “coordinated media attacks” against outspoken online figures like Joe Rogan, who faced criticism for taking the deworming drug ivermectin to treat Covid-19 in 2021.
